Headline smeared school

The Spokesman-Review

In The Spokesman-Review of May 29, there was a headline that jumped out at me: “WV grad guilty of rape, murder.”

How awful, I thought. Is this someone who graduated just this year? As I began to read the article the facts unfolded. This was a former Spokane man who was convicted of a heinous crime in Reno, Nev. He graduated from West Valley High School in 1999.

All I have to say to this is good grief! Talk about yellow journalism! Why couldn’t your headlines have read “Former Spokane man guilty of rape, murder”?

I empathize with recent graduates of West Valley High School who have had this horrific event associated with their school. There was absolutely no need whatsoever to include it in your sensational headline.
