Rockford fair gets boost from Freeman 4-H club

The Freeman 4-H club recently held a bake sale at the Rockford Frog Regatta. The group raised $102, which they donated to the Southeast Spokane County (Rockford) Fair. The Freeman 4-H club held a bake sale recently to raise funds for the Rockford Fair. Ryan Hicks, an 8-year-old participant in the club, wrote the following to describe the event:

“The Freeman 4-H Club recently held a bake sale at the Rockford Frog Regatta. The 4-H Club raised $102, which they donated to the Southeast Spokane County (Rockford) Fair. They raised the funds after they heard the Rockford Fair was running short on funds due to state budget cuts.”

Photography awards

Students from West Valley High School submitted photographs to compete in the Inland Empire Chapter of the Photographic Society of America’s Youth Showcase Judging 2010.

The following students had their work qualify for nationals: Pauline Dupont for her photo, “Masonic Temple”; Tasha Steinhart for her photo, “Lily”; Daisy Powell for her piece, “Forest”; Lyleann Bailey for “Struggling”; Jessica Ray for “Timeless Sand”; and Danielle Wagner for “Looking through the Glass.”

Powell placed third overall in the Inland Empire Region, and Bailey and Steinhart have been chosen to display their pieces at an exhibition in Charleston, S.C.

Summer meal program

Central Valley School District will offer free meals starting June 23 at Broadway Elementary School, 11016 E. Broadway Ave.

The Simplified Summer Food Program is available to children 18 and younger. Registration is not required and children do not need to be attending schools in the district.

Meals will be served Monday through Thursday at the school. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and lunch will be served from noon to 12:45 p.m.

Scholarship winners

Inland Power and Light recently awarded 15 $1,000 Excellence Award Scholarships to high school students.

Students who received the scholarship in the Greater Spokane Valley area and in Freeman were: Katie Bauer, Freeman; Rachel Duckett, East Valley; Cameron Floch, Freeman; Stevie Gildehaus, University; and Maggie Shields, West Valley.
