GSL announces spring sports award winners

The Greater Spokane League has announced its Spring NECA/IBEW awards.

Here are the winners from each school:

Central Valley, Ashley Renz (track) and Cameron Allan (soccer); East Valley, Christina Nelson (track) and Aaron Awbery (baseball); Ferris, Kelsey Lin (track) and Gage Orosco (track); Gonzaga Prep, Katie Clarizio (track) and Ben Rowland (baseball); Lewis and Clark, Richelle Signer (track), Peter Williams (golf); Mead, Alison Smith (tennis), Ethan Vaughn (tennis); Mt. Spokane, Valerie Nauditt (tennis), Michael Blankenship (baseball); North Central, Celena Ward (track), Tyler Groom (soccer); Rogers, Zanovia Clark (tennis), Robert Vangundy (track); Shadle Park, Katelyn Harvey (softball), David Lee (tennis); University, Alene Bethel (softball), Joel Hetrick (track).

All-Star games

Three Washington All-State Girls Basketball games will be held June 19 at West Valley High School.

The Bs square off first at 1:30 p.m., followed by the 1As at 3:30 and the combined 3A/2A teams at 5:30.

Admission is $5 for all three games for adults and $3 for senior citizens and children under 12.

Area girls playing on the East B team are: Kayla Johnson of state champion Colfax, Shelby Barnes of Asotin, Chessey Thomas of St. George’s, Kelsey Moos of Reardan, Kelsey Moser of Colton and Shelbea Rainbolt of Springdale. Colfax coach Corey Baerlocher will co-coach the team with Alyssa Goins of LaSalle.

Area girls playing on the East 1A team are: Mackenzie Taylor, Korina Baker and Megan McIntyre of state champion Freeman, Lexie Zappone and Leslie Stillar of Lakeside, Samantha Charlton of Kettle Falls and Bailey Wuesthoff of Chewelah. Freeman coach Ashlee Taylor will coach the team.

Area girls playing on the East 3A/2A team are: Shaniqua Nilles and Hannah Love of West Valley, Laykin Brophy of Cheney, Shelby Cheslek and Danielle Hodge of Pullman, Jorden Brons of Colville, KC McConnell of Clarkston and Riley Holsinger of North Central. West Valley coach Loren Carlon will coach the team.

Coaches of the year

Priest River girls basketball coach Gary Stewart, Priest River boys basketball coach Ryan Bodecker and Coeur d’Alene wrestling coach Jeff Moffat were named District I coaches of the year for winter sports.

Each coached their teams to state championships.

Lake City trainer Beven Rich has been named the Idaho State Coaches Association athletic trainer of the year. She will receive the award at a coaching clinic this summer in Caldwell.

Soccer teams advance

The Coeur d’Alene Sting U18 boys and U13 girls teams each captured the US Youth Soccer Idaho Championships, qualifying for the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships in Bernalillo, N.M., June 21-27.

The Region IV Championships feature top teams in the Under-12 through Under-19 age groups beginning with round-robin games June 21. The title games will be June 27.

Regional winners of the Under-14 through Under-19 brackets earn a berth to the 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championships July 20-25, at Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kan.

Manager earns award

Shadle Park boys basketball manager Jason Kurth received the Diane Roeser Memorial Award.

Roeser helped coordinate team hosts for the boys and girls basketball teams at the state tournaments at the Tacoma Dome. She passed away in January 2006. The award is given annually to a girl and boy participating in the tournaments. The nominees can be players, band members, cheer staff, drill team members, trainers, mascots, team managers. The nominee should demonstrate outstanding qualities that make them inspirational and touch people’s hearts.

The award was presented to Kurth during an assembly this week at Shadle Park.

Signings

Post Falls teammates Danielle Meehan and Christine Deitz have accepted scholarships to continue their volleyball careers at Walla Walla Community College next season.

Meehan, a first-team All-Inland Empire League selection, and Deitz helped the Trojans to their first league title in school history and to the state tournament for the first time in 17 years.

•Shadle Park boys basketball standouts Robby Douglas and Taylor Pettersen have signed letters of intent. Douglas is headed to Whitworth University and Pettersen is going to Community Colleges of Spokane.

•Malcolm Colbert of 5A state champion Post Falls has signed to play at the University of Puget Sound.

This ‘n’ that

Kyle Bradbury of Newport tossed a no-hitter last week, striking out 16 with five walks in a 7-0 win over Mead.

Another noteworthy effort last week came when Tyler Crawford of University pitched a complete-game win. He had a four hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks in a 2-0 win over Central Valley.
