Gonzaga University’s vice president for finance has been given Gonzaga Prep’s highest honor: a St. Aloysius Medal.
Chuck Murphy is the 47th recipient of the annual award, which goes to the person with outstanding service to secondary education and to Gonzaga Prep, said Al Falkner, Gonzaga Preparatory School president.
“He has helped guide the university through its tremendous growth in facilities over the past decade and has navigated them successfully through this past economic recession,” Falkner said.
Murphy graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 1969 and Gonzaga University in 1973, school officials said. Murphy joined the university in 1978 as the controller and became the vice president for finance in 1985.
Murphy has served on numerous boards, including Catholic Charities Foundation and the Catholic Charities Housing Board, Falkner said. Murphy also served on the Gonzaga Prep school board for two terms.
Murphy was one of the founders of Gonzaga Prep’s fair share program, which helps pay the tuition of students whose families cannot afford the full amount, officials said.
