Eastern Washington University’s bookstore on the Riverpoint campus in Spokane has been burglarized five times in the past month, most recently Tuesday.

Spokane police responded to an alarm shortly after 9 p.m. to find a burglar running from the rear of the University Bookstore, 528 E. Spokane Falls Blvd., according to Dave Meany, EWU spokesman.

Police were unable to catch the thief.

Meany said campus police have learned that the textbooks are being sold for cash, possibly to pay for drugs.

Textbook buybacks are held at the end of each school year and might provide an opportunity to resell the stolen textbooks, Meany said.

Burglaries at the EWU bookstore in Spokane also occurred on May 14, May 21 and twice over the Memorial Day holiday, he said.
