Shock sign backup QB

The Spokesman-Review

Arena football: An illness to backup quarterback Erik Meyer (in photo) has led to the Shock signing Brian Zbydniewski.

Meyer isn’t expected to make the trip for Saturday’s game at Orlando, leaving Spokane without a backup behind Kyle Rowley.

Enter Zbydniewski, who was a Shock backup QB in 2006. Zbydniewski played for af2 Quad-City in 2009 and he lives about 90 minutes from Orlando, Fla.

Zbydniewski will serve as the backup Saturday and the Shock anticipate Meyer will be back on the field next week.

In other moves, the team released Ruschard Dodd-Masters and signed Mervin Brookins. Both play defensive back.

The Shock didn’t have a choice regarding Dodd-Masters. He apparently played two games for Wenatchee Valley of the AIFA after March 1. Per Arena Football League rules, players who have played on teams in lower leagues after March 1 are ineligible to play on an AFL team this season.

Public Wooden memorial set

College basketball: A public memorial service for John Wooden will be held June 26 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, where Wooden coached the Bruins to several of their record 10 national championships.

About 6,000 seats in Pauley’s middle and upper levels will be available to the public on a general admission basis.

Floor seats will be reserved for the Wooden family, current and former Bruins basketball players and coaches and other designated guests.

The service will be televised live in Los Angeles.

Wooden died June 4 at age 99.
