Freedom precedes rights
I heard part of a Memorial Day speech commemorating our veterans and the sacrifices they made while defending this country. Some rest in cemeteries.
This speaker gave them accolades for fighting for what they believed in – our rights and the rights of others around the world. I heard nothing else. I thought the speaker had been misinformed. I have always believed our military fought for our freedom.
Without freedom, there are no rights. Some will never experience the freedom to realize their talents, make a living or to even see their families again.
Our forefathers fought for the liberty to live without tyranny. The Civil War was fought over slavery – to unshackle men, women and children to take their places in an independent American society.
I heard of the unspeakable atrocities that our servicemen endured in the Philippines in World War II. They endured for the hope of freedom.
With Flag Day and Fourth of July coming, I could not let this mistake go unnoticed. We covet our rights, but without freedom, our rights are nonexistent. Let’s not belittle the torch America has carried for over two centuries and honor our military in spirit and truth. Let freedom ring!
