Girl dies after Thursday crash in north Spokane County

The Spokesman-Review

A 9-year-old girl injured in a collision Thursday evening in north Spokane County has died, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Olivia Chaffin, of Deer Park, was a passenger along with her grandmother in a car driven by her father, Richard Chaffin. A pizza delivery driver who failed to stop at a stop sign about 6 p.m. broadsided the Chaffin’s vehicle at Monroe and Hazard roads.

Richard Chaffin, who had minor injuries, performed CPR on his daughter until medics arrived. The girl was airlifted to a Spokane hospital where she was declared brain dead Saturday and died Sunday afternoon. An autopsy was performed Monday.

The grandmother, Shirley Chaffin, 64, suffered fractures.

Authorities identified the driver of the other vehicle as Echo Henderson, 24, of Clayton.

An investigation of the crash continues, said sheriff’s Detective Dave Thornburg.

Everyone is entitled to a vigorous defense and should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. THEN hang this SOB.

I was just rear-ended today because a couple of teenage girls were failing to pay attention. I feel for this poor family, but I dont think they should “hang the SOB” - a pizza delivery driver for failing to stop at a stop sign. It was a horrible accident this guy (or girl?) will have to live with for the rest of their lives as well… and certainly he will pay the price for not following the rules resulting in such a terrible tragedy.

But it just goes to show how things can change with the blink of an eye. Literally.

“Hang the sob”! You are as sick as they come! This 24yr old young lady made a mistake, we are humans. Can you honestly say you have never ran a red light, have always come to a complete stop at a stop sign, you drive around with no errors?! I doubt it. This is a tragedy for both families! A life lesson for all involved life is so unpredictable and short. I doubt this young driver set out to hurt someone that day. Truly tragic for both parties involved. The driver will have to live with her mistake for the rest of her life and while the girls family will eventually find some sense of peace as the yrs go on, the driver will never forget what she has done, lets pray she finds strength to forgive herself. My heart goes out to Olivia’s family as well as Echo’s!

Hang the SOB? Are you for real? Is this what you want to happen if you have an accident since I’m sure you have made mistakes in driving. I didn’t read that this driver was drunk or maliciously out to hurt this family,
