Big barbecue bash in Idaho

If Dad is a fan of barbecue, treat him to Smokin’ The Coeur d’Alenes, Inland Northwest Barbecue Championship this weekend.

Area teams will compete for awards and prize money Saturday and Sunday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. The grand champion of the event will be considered the Idaho state champion and have a chance to compete at top national barbecue events such as the Jack Daniel’s Invitational, American Royal Barbecue and Great American Barbecue Festival.

Watch the pros at work and check out cooking demonstrations. There will be barbecue from local companies, beer, live music and a kids’ zone.

Spices, sauces, rubs and more will be sold.

The gates open Saturday at 9 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. Demonstrations include:

9:30 a.m. – Traegar Grill demo

10:30 a.m. – Barbecue meat selection with Tim’s Special Cut Meats

11:30 a.m. – Cooking with planks with Outdoor Gourmet

12:30 a.m. – Sausage making class with Michlitch’s Spokane Spice Co.

1:30 p.m. – Using wood for flavor with the 1910 Smokin’ Wood Co.

On Sunday, the gates open at 9 a.m. Watch the barbecue teams get ready to turn in samples of their meats. They’ll be pulling pork out of the smokers at 11 a.m., brisket at noon, chicken at 1 p.m. and ribs at 2 p.m.

At 3 p.m., there will be drawing for a $1,000 Traeger grill package. Tickets have the drawing numbers and the winner must be present.

Tickets are $5 each, and children younger than 16 are admitted free. Bring a can of non-perishable food to receive $2 off. The food will be donated to Community Action Partnership.
