SFCC online site, paper win awards
When Spokane Falls Community College remade its journalism program in 2009, educators and students created an award-winning online publication to go along with its print edition.
The student-run Communicator Online and the Communicator have been recognized with numerous awards this year, including three awards from the Associated Collegiate Press and two from the Society of Professional Journalists.
The website was one of 20 in the division of colleges with enrollment under 10,000 that won the ACP Pacemaker award based on “design, ease of navigation, writing and editing, graphics and interactivity,” according to college spokeswoman Jocelyn Stott. The newspaper placed fourth in Best of Show for two-year colleges and audio podcast, among all schools, officials said.
The SPJ awarded the Communicator Online first place for best newspaper- affiliated website, and the print edition received second place for best nondaily newspaper at a two-year college in the region: Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

I’d just like to clarify the program was remade in 2005. Also, Jocelyn Stott doesn’t show up anywhere on SFCC’s website in staff lists. Is this a new spokesperson for The Falls?

Hi ltreffry. I am a marketing and public relations specialist working out of the district office downtown. I have been sending press releases and media advisories to the Spokesman-Review regarding SFCC events for the last six years. I have sent several regarding the journalism program and the many awards earned by Communicator staff (as well as other great programs at SFCC). I’m really glad to finally see some recognition for this program. In my press releases, I supply SFCC contacts for stories, however in this instance, the S-R chose to use me as a spokesperson for a reason unknown to me. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me directly. I am in the district directory.
