Furlough days for teachers

The Coeur d’Alene School District recently sent out a letter to parents, announcing six mandatory furlough days for Coeur d’Alene teachers to the revised calendar for the 2010-’11 school year. The calendar dates were decided at the June 7 school board meeting.

According to the letter, the furlough days will represent an approximate 3.2percent pay cut to district employees as a result of the Coeur d’Alene Education Association and the district’s recent contract negotiations. The letter states that the “cost saving” measures are being taken to balance the budget and offset reduced funding from the state.

The scheduled furlough days include Nov. 12; Dec. 31; Jan. 3 and Jan. 4; Feb. 14; and June 14.

Students will meet state requirements for instruction, but to do so, the district must eliminate the spring parent-teacher conference day.

The district will have child care available on furlough days for families who participate in the School PLUS program.

For more information, call (208) 664-8241 or visit www.cdaschools.org.

Teachers in the Post Falls School District have also received a 3.2percent pay cut after contract negotiations. Post Falls teachers will take five mandatory furlough days and medical benefits have been cut by 5percent.

The furlough days for Post Falls include Oct. 8; Nov. 24; Feb. 18; March 25; and June 13.
