In brief: Community blood drive starts Tuesday

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Inland Northwest Blood Center will hold a community wide blood drive Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

INBC locations include the Spokane collection center, 210 W. Cataldo Ave.; Spokane Valley collection center, at the Valley Hospital and Medical Center, 12606 E. Mission Ave.; Coeur d’Alene collection center, 1341 Northwood Center Court.

INBC is reaching out to the community for a goal of 1,300 donors to donate their blood or platelets to help those in need.

Pirates plan

COEUR D’ALENE – “The Pirates of the Coeur d’Alene” cruise on Lake Coeur d’Alene will make its debut next Thursday and will run through Aug. 31.

The interactive cruise is intended for children and parents, and includes a bag of goodies, along with “pirate grog,” photo opportunities, and plenty of pirate banter. The action takes place aboard a fully decked out ship, complete with cannons and costumed cast members of the Lake City Playhouse.

The cruises will run twice daily, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $29 for adults and $19 for children, age 6 to 12. Children age 5 and younger are free.

Camp Fire marks centennial July 31

COEUR D’ALENE – Camp Fire USA will hold it’s centennial celebration July 31 at Camp Sweyolakan, 3088 W. Lutherhaven Road in Coeur d’Alene.

The festivities will begin on a cruise, departing from Independence Point in Coeur d’Alene’s City Park at 2 p.m. The fun continues with swimming, archery, the giant swing, canoeing and spending time with Camp Fire friends. The night celebration includes a centennial fire and a wish boat ceremony.

Attendees are invited to bring scrapbooks, archival items, and vintage Camp Fire treasures and share their memories. Memories will be collected in a centennial book.

The centennial celebration ends at 11 p.m.

Cost for the celebration is $15 per adult and $5 per child, 17 and younger. Children age 3 and younger are free.

Ride will benefit pancreatic cancer

CENTENNIAL TRAIL – The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network “Purple Ride Spok-d’Alene” 2010 will be Aug. 28 on the Centennial Trail to raise money for pancreatic cancer research.

The 35-mile bike ride will begin in Mission Park in Spokane and end in Riverstone Park in Coeur d’Alene. Participants may also choose to bike in a 15-mile or 4-mile family ride.

The ride will include a community picnic and prizes. The Kelly Hughes Band will also perform.

Cost is $20 per person and includes a T-shirt and a picnic ticket. Tickets to the picnic are $10 per person for those not participating in the bike ride.
