Game wardens kill black bear that injured camper

Associated Press

MISSOULA, Mont. — Montana wildlife officials say game wardens have killed a black bear that injured a man when it bit through his tent at a primitive campsite in the Lolo National Forest in the western part of the state.

Rob Holmes, of Ellensburg, Wash., was awakened early Monday morning when he felt the 170-pound sow bear bite his ear lobe. It took 21 stitches to close the wound.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks wardens say it appears the bear was drawn into the area by food and other attractants that were left at a nearby camp site. Wardens also killed the sow’s cub Thursday after confirming reports the bears had become accustomed to human food.
