Williams leads men’s amateur by one shot
Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, shot a 2-over-par 74 to take sole possession of the lead on Thursday at the Washington State Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship at White Horse Golf Club in Kingston, Wash.
Williams, who plays for the University of Washington, is the only player in the field under par with a 54-hole total of 1-under 215. Heading into today’s final round he holds a one-shot lead over T.J Bordeaux of Tacoma and Jeremy Wendelken of Sammamish, Wash.
•Canadian Pamela Burneski successfully defended her WSGA Women’s Amateur Championship by winning a playoff with Simone Strauss of Kirkland, Wash., after both finished 54 holes at 220 over the Cedars At Dungeness course in Sequim, Wash. The top local finisher was Chessey Thomas of Spokane at 230 for eighth place.
•Victoria Fallgren’s run in the 34th U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links came to an end when the Gonzaga University sophomore-to-be fell 5 and 4 to fellow Californian Joy Trotter, the 23rd seed, in the second round of match play at The Warren Course at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played today with a 36-hole final on Saturday.
The tournament is open to amateurs who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4 and who don’t hold privileges at any course that doesn’t extend playing privileges to the general public.
Women’s basketball
The University of Idaho has signed guard Keri Arendse from Skagit Valley College. Arendse, 5-foot-8, will have two years of eligibility at Idaho.
Arendse was team captain at Skagit Valley College, and averaged 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.0 steals per game as she led the Cardinals to a 21-4 overall record and a 15-1 record in NWAACC play in 2009-10.
Arena football
The Spokane Shock activated offensive lineman Rob McMackin from injured reserve and he will be available to play in Saturday’s game at Milwaukee. Offensive lineman/fullback Harrison Nikolao has been placed on the IR list with an undisclosed injury.
Prep football
Two high school all-star football games will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday in Everett and Yakima.
The 4A/3A East-West All-Star Football Game will be played at Everett Memorial Stadium.
