Two shopkeepers in Spokane Valley want to dress you up – not too fancy, but casual fun, flirty and definitely colorful.

”We want women to go beyond basic black … or even add a brightly colored scarf to their black top,” said Orchid Boutique co-owner Sarah MacKay. “We’re going for casual cute.”

MacKay, a licensed esthetician, and personal stylist Tracy Stout opened Orchid Boutique in February with a mission to help women discover a personal style that brings out their personalities and beauty. The two focus on seasonal specialty items with fun and flair that also keep in mind the conservative nature of the local shopper.

“We wanted to do something that was fun and casual but still well-priced,” said MacKay. “We’re still kind of playing a lot to see what people like.”

She says customers can find blouses beginning at about $20, handbags at about $40.

MacKay changed up her previous hair salon and skin care business at the same location – in the same building as The Trellis – and continues her skin care business in a separate room of the boutique. She purchases many of the accessories that include jewelry and handbags, and also sells her personal line of soaps and lotions called Stella’s Garden.

Stout handles purchasing of the clothing line, most of which is ordered from California distributors.

Orchid Boutique has a cozy and fun atmosphere with one dressing room and a vast array of eye candy for the shopper. Together, the boutique and skin care room are about 650 square feet. The two shopkeepers promise customers personal attention, advice and encouragement to try new style opportunities.

Stout promises a fun shopping experience and hopes customers will enjoy her creative finesse.

“I love when people step out of the black and white box,” she said. “I want to offer advice on how to change up an outfit with accessories because there’s more than one way to wear something. And if you’re wondering what can go with a pair of shoes, bring them in and I’ll show you.”
