Spiders, Tide end in draw
The Spokane Spiders, down two goals in the second half, rallied to take the lead but then had to settle for a 4-4 draw with the Tacoma Tide in a Premier Development League soccer game played at Albi Stadium on Friday night.
Rommel Forde scored at 82 minutes to give the Spiders (1-8-2) their first lead over the Tide (6-2-2) but a couple of minutes later Tacoma tied the match.
Philippe Garre, Ben Funkhouser and Michael Noonan had the other Spiders’ goals with Funkhouser’s coming on a penalty kick.
The Spiders play next against Portland at Tigard HS on Friday.
Golf
Jeremy Wendelken of Sammamish, Wash., fired a final-round 2-under-par 70 to win the Washington State Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship at White Horse Golf Club in Kingston, Wash.
Third-round leader Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, faltered on the back nine and finished with a 76 for a 291 total and third place.
TJ Bordeaux of Tacoma was second at 289.
College soccer
Gonzaga University will welcome 16 newcomers to camp in August, including area athletes Alex Cutter of Ferris, Nick Hamer of Mead, and twin brothers David and Nico Sanchez, graduates of Moscow HS.
Other newcomers are Conrad Bess, Chatfield High, Littleton, Colo.; Aubrey Brown, La Costa Canyon High, Encinitas, Calif.; Greg Carter, Davis (Calif.) High; Keane Ellis, Kaiser High, Honolulu; Taylor Jackson, Auburn (Wash.) High; Jakeem Lewis, Jesuit High, Sacramento, Calif.; Jamison Loveless, Boise High; Connor McGregor, Walsingham Academy, Williamsburg, Va.; Andrew Owenson, Cardinal Newman High, Sonoma, Calif.; Josh Phillips, Capital High, Olympia; Reed Stauffer, Capital High, Eagle, Idaho; and Brendan Wesley-Smith, Mid-Pacific High, Honolulu.
Cutter, a midfielder/forward, is the all-time goal scorer in Saxons history with 37 and has 12 career assists even after sitting out most of his junior year with an injury.
Cutter and Hamer were named the GSL Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, as voted by the league coaches.
David Sanchez has 22 career goals and 30 career assists for the Bears. Nico had 20 career goals and 29 assists.
Women’s soccer
Gonzaga University has added four more players to its women’s soccer team: Bev Amstadter, Julia Fjortoft, Kailey Kiefus and Megan Marks.
Amstadter is from Lewis and Clark HS, where she played soccer and basketball. The midfielder was named the team’s MVP in helping the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the state tournament this past season.
Fjortoft is a Meadowdale HS graduate (Lynnwood, Wash.). Kiefus, comes to the Bulldogs from Foothill HS (North Tustin, Calif.). Marks is a Boise HS graduate.
