St. Mary’s will honor Monsignor John Steiner

A retirement Mass and reception will be held Sunday for Monsignor John Steiner, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Mass will begin at 11:15 a.m. and will be followed by a reception at 12:30 p.m. at the church, 304 S. Adams Road.

Steiner was ordained a priest in 1969. He has served as pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, St. John Vianney and St. Thomas More in addition to his time at St. Mary’s since 2003. He has also been serving as co-vicar general of the Catholic Diocese of Spokane. The vicar general is second in command under Bishop William Skylstad. In 1997 he was named a monsignor, an honorary title given in recognition of service to the church.

According to the Diocese website, Steiner will still work after his retirement. He will serve as the administrator of the parishes in Ritzville, Lind and Washtucna.

Steiner will be replaced by the Rev. Victor Blazovich, most recently pastor of St. Patrick and St. Francis Xavier Catholic churches and also principal of St. Patrick’s Catholic School.
