Beware phony petition pitch

On five occasions I have been asked to sign a petition to “lower my taxes” and “remove sales taxes from candy and soda.” In each case, when I read the petition, it was actually to implement a Washington state income tax.

When I pointed this out to the petitioner, I got exactly the same response, “Oh, I didn’t know that, I’ll change what I’m saying about it.” Later, when I exited from the store, in every case, the petitioner was using exactly the same call to “lower your taxes.”

On three occasions, when people were about to sign the petition, I suggested they actually read the petition’s heading. When they did so, they all handed back the petition unsigned and left.

So, folks, be a little wary, because what you think you see ain’t what you’re going to get.
