Argentina, Germany advance in World Cup

Soccer: Thomas Mueller scored twice in the second half Sunday and England had a goal not awarded by the referee in a 4-1 victory in Bloemfontein, South Africa, that put Germany into the World Cup quarterfinals.

England was not helped by referee Jorge Larrionda waving play on even though Frank Lampard’s first-half shot landed well past the goal line after hitting the crossbar. Germany led 2-1 at the time.

Germany went up on goals by Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski before Matthew Upson pulled a goal back in the 37th minute.

On Lampard’s non-goal, after the ball landed inside the goal, it ball spun back into the arms of Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. England coach Fabio Capello initially celebrated what he thought was an equalizer by clenching his fists and shaking his arms. But his face changed when he realized the goal had not been given.

Argentina beats Mexico 3-1: Carlos Tevez scored twice – once on a disputed goal – and Gonzalo Higuain added another as Argentina beat Mexico 3-1 in Johannesburg to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals.

Tevez was offside when he headed in a pass from Lionel Messi in the eighth minute. The referee awarded the goal after consulting with his linesman, the pair surrounded by angrily gesturing Mexican and Argentine players.

Argentina now plays Germany in the final eight, a repeat of the 2006 quarterfinals, which the Germans won. The Germans also beat Argentina in the 1990 World Cup final.

In the 33rd minute, Higuain rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 after Ricardo Osorio, under no pressure, played the ball straight into his path. In the 52nd, Tevez rifled in a shot from 25 yards.

Messi, one of the best playmakers in the tournament, again failed to score and struggled in midfield for much of the game. Still he came close: His shot in the 91st minute was tipped over the bar.

Sounders lose to Union: The Philadelphia Union opened their new stadium in style.

Fred scored the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute to help the Philadelphia Union open their new stadium with a 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders in Chester, Pa.

Rookie Danny Mwanga added a goal in the 85th minute to seal the win at $122 million PPL Park, where some of the crowd of 18,755 arrived four hours before the game.

Storm rally past Shock for road win

WNBA: Svetlana Abrosimova scored 19 of her season-high 21 points in the second half and the Western Conference-leading Seattle Storm overcame a 13-point second-half deficit to defeat the Tulsa Shock 83-72 in Tulsa, Okla.

Down by five points entering the fourth quarter, Abrosimova and Seattle found their touch from 3-point range, hitting 5of8 from behind the arc in the quarter, including four consecutive 3s that keyed a 16-0 Storm run.

Fever hold off Sky: Ebony Hoffman scored 13 points and Katie Douglas and Jessica Moore added 10 apiece and the Indiana Fever held off a late Chicago Sky rally for a 70-64 victory in Rosemont, Ill.

Briann January (Lewis and Clark) scored eight points and added two assists in 20 minutes off the bench. She also hit two free throws with 13.1 second remaining to extend Indiana’s lead to 68-64.

Red Bull’s Vettel wins European Grand Prix

Auto Racing: Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel won the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain, dominating from the pole in a race that saw teammate Mark Webber walk away from a spectacular crash.

Vettel won his second grand prix of the season, completing 57 laps of the Valencia street circuit ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

Anderson sweeps Pro Stock weekend: Greg Anderson raced to his first Pro Stock victory of the season at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.

Anderson outran Allen Johnson in the final round for his 61st career victory. Anderson’s Pontiac GXP posted a winning performance of 6.722 seconds at a top speed of 204.54 mph.

Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.

Former White Sox announcer dies

Miscellany: The Chicago White Sox say former play-by-play announcer Lorn Brown has died.

Brown died on Thursday in Las Cruces, N.M. He was 71. The White Sox did not provide a cause of death.

Wimbledon takes a day off, resumes today: After a wild first week, Wimbledon took its traditional break before resuming today, when all 32 remaining men and women are scheduled to play.

After Sunday’s day off, today’s fourth round will include defending champion Serena Williams against Maria Sharapova in a rematch of the 2004 final and won by the Russian, and former No. 1s Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin meeting for the 25th time.
