Deadline is nearing for your fair entries

The Spokesman-Review

This rainy, cool spring has provided ample time for perfecting those blue-ribbon recipes.

Now get some props for incredibly flaky crusts, steady decorating techniques or even tasty gluten-free goodies.

Entry forms for this year’s Spokane County Interstate Fair food contests are due by Aug. 10. Prizes are awarded during the fair, which will be held Sept. 10-19.

There are more than just blue ribbons and bragging rights at stake in a few of the contests. Ghirardelli, Fleischmann’s Yeast and Karo Corn Syrup are sponsoring contests with up to $150 in prize money.

The Karo Perfect Pie contest is making its debut at the fair this year. Whip up any kind of dessert pie with Karo syrup for a chance to win this competition. Pies with any kind of filling and any crust – homemade, store bought, or no crust at all – are allowed.

All ages are welcome to enter. The first place winner gets $100 cash; second is $50; third is $25. Each winner also receives an award certificate, ribbon and apron.

Test those baking skills in the Bake for the Cure at the Fair, sponsored by Fleischmann’s Yeast. ACH Food Companies Inc. will donate $10 per entry in contests nationwide to Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer research on behalf of its Fleischmann’s yeast brand.

There are two categories: traditional or whole-grain yeast breads and baked goods. Any flavor or shape of baked good may be entered as long as the recipe features Fleischmann’s yeast. Themes and decorative presentations are encouraged.

The first category awards $150 for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third. In the second category, $100 will be awarded for the best bread that contains at least 50 percent whole grains.

Chocolate lovers won’t want to miss a chance to test recipes for the Ghirardelli Chocolate Championship. Any chocolate creation is allowed, as long as it features one Ghirardelli product and no more than 10 other ingredients.

First- and second-place entries receive $150 and $50, respectively. The top three winners take home a Ghirardelli gift basket, prize ribbon, apron and award certificate. One random contestant also will win a gift basket.

Sorry, SPAM lovers – that contest is not listed among this year’s offerings in the exhibitor’s guide.
