In brief: No. 3 Purdue can’t score, falls to MSU

College men: Raymar Morgan had 16 points and 11 rebounds to help No. 14 Michigan State beat No. 3 Purdue 53-44 on Sunday at West Lafayette, Ind., and snap the Boilermakers’ 10-game win streak.

E’Twaun Moore scored 12 points, and JaJuan Johnson and Chris Kramer scored 11 for Purdue in its first game since losing versatile forward Robbie Hummel. The junior tore the ACL in his right knee last Wednesday against Minnesota and will miss the rest of the season.

Michigan State outrebounded Purdue 46-20 to overcome 23 turnovers. Purdue shot 30 percent from the field and posted its lowest point total of the season.

Xavier upsets No. 23 Richmond in 2OT: With a long home-court winning streak and another Atlantic 10 title in jeopardy, point guard Terrell Holloway acted like he was back on the hard courts in New York.

Holloway scored seven of his 24 points during the second overtime, leading Xavier to a 78-76 win over No. 23 Richmond in a showdown for first place at Cincinnati.

Richmond sent it to overtime with a clutch shot and good defense. David Gonzalvez hit a tying 3 with 24 seconds left in regulation, and Xavier’s Jordan Crawford missed a tough 3 at the buzzer. Crawford also missed a 12-foot jumper in a crowd at the end of the first overtime, keeping it tied at 70.

Strong second half lifts UNC over Duke

College women: Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half to help North Carolina upset No. 6 Duke 64-54 at Chapel Hill, N.C., and earn a needed victory for its shaky NCAA tournament hopes.

Waltiea Rolle added 12 points, seven rebounds and six blocks for the Tar Heels (18-10, 6-8 Atlantic Coast Conference), who pushed ahead for good behind DeGraffenreid in the final 10 minutes.

Lady Vols cruise past Mississippi: Shekinna Stricklen scored 23 points, Alicia Manning added a career-high 15 and No. 4 Tennessee fought off a second-half rally from Mississippi for a 75-63 victory at Knoxville, Tenn.

Angie Bjorklund (University HS) added seven points and game-high four assists for the Vols.

The Rebels (16-13, 6-8) lost for the eighth time in 10 games despite Bianca Thomas’ 34 points, the second-highest total of her senior year.

Jefferson, Spurs halt Suns’ winning streak

NBA: Richard Jefferson scored 20 points in his best game since losing his starting job, and the San Antonio Spurs beat visiting Phoenix 113-110 to end the Suns’ five-game winning streak.

Amare Stoudemire had a season-high 41 points and 12 rebounds for Phoenix, but Jefferson and the Spurs hung on late to hand the Suns only their second loss since the All-Star break.

Tim Duncan had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs. Manu Ginobili also scored 21, including 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Djokovic retains Dubai title with win

Tennis: Novak Djokovic successfully defended his Dubai Championships title, beating Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in a rain-delayed final at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Leading 7-5, 2-0 before rain suspended play on Saturday, the second-seeded Serb won his 17th career title in a match lasting 3 hours, 21 minutes at the Aviation Club. There were seven breaks of serve in Sunday’s 19 games.

Gulbis wins Delray Beach title: Ernests Gulbis became the first Latvian to win an ATP Tour title when he upset second-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-2, 6-3 at the Delray Beach International Championships at Delray Beach, Fla.

The 72nd-ranked Gulbis, who never dropped a set all week, will move to a top-40 ranking next week after his first title. He won 45 of 48 service games in five matches played this week.

Defending champions Bob and Mike Bryan moved into second place on the Open Era doubles titles list when they won their 58th career title at the tournament.

Kleybanova wins first career title: Alisa Kleybanova won her first WTA title at the Malaysian Open, beating top-seeded Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-2 in an all-Russian final at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The 21-year-old Kleybanova dominated the Olympic champion, using her raw power and booming first serve to earn most of her points. Once described as the new Monica Seles due to her aggressive play, Kleybanova served four aces in the first set.

Manchester United defends League Cup

Miscellany: Wayne Rooney scored his 28th goal of the club season as Manchester United successfully defended the League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley, England.

Rooney sent a powerful header over American goalkeeper Brad Friedel in the 74th minute to settle the first meeting of U.S.-owned clubs in an English final.

Trammell wins 5th indoor hurdles championship: Two-time Olympic silver medalist hurdler Terrence Trammell posted a time of 7.41 seconds to win his fifth U.S. indoor title at Albuquerque, N.M.

In another performance of note, 2008 Olympic silver medalist shot putter Christian Cantwell won the event with a throw of 69-feet, 4-inches.
