More cameras to capture red-light runners as of today

The Spokesman-Review

Four new cameras to catch red-light runners will be activated Monday.

The Photo Red systems will be located at Freya Street facing north at Third Avenue, Second Avenue facing west at Thor Street, Wellesley Avenue facing east at Ash Street, and Division Street facing north at Sprague Ave.

Warning notices will be mailed for traffic violations committed at those intersections during the first 31 days, said Spokane Police Officer Teresa Fuller. Actual citations will be issued starting April 1.

Spokane has had Photo Red cameras at three intersections since October 2008. So far, “they’ve captured over 7,500 red-light runners,” Fuller said.

The report should say, “So far we’ve made lots of money catching the 7,500 red-light runners.”

We all know the cameras are there to give tickets… not to cut down on red-light runners. If it was the other way around & they actually want to really stop the red-light runners, why not post a sign saying, “This intersection is posted with red-light cameras.”

Then let’s see how many people actually stop!

Our tiny little bus system only covers the city of Spokane and Spokane Valley, it doesn’t even connect to post falls or Mt Spokane Highway. Fixing that would be more effective than those corporate cameras with short yellow lights and huge profits.

    What a bunch of whiners!

Last tuesday I was stopped on Sprague west bound at Division. When the light turned green I started out, caught a blur in my left vision. Slammed on the brakes as an SUV blew through the stone red light missing me by about 2”

4 women riding in it and the driver appeared to be talking on her cell phone, no matter. Had I started out faster I would probably have been hit in the drivers door and since the SUV was going about 40 I probably wouldn’t be here to type anymore on my keyboard.

I see this every day in Spokane. Look people, if you don’t want to contribute to these cameras then stop for the red lights. There is no conspiracy here, just stop when the lights tell you to, pure and simple.

And for the person who just said “why don’t they put up a sign saying this is a red light intersection”. I have news for you,,,,they have already done that. And its obvious few are paying attention to them.

Mr. Norton is correct - like 100% correct. I’ve “been there” and support these cameras. I would like to see even more added to the city/county high risk intersections.

There are lots of studies and the Spokane Police have even indicated that the cameras have not reduced accidents, in fact they are up on those intersections with cameras; however, the city has made a profit of more $113,000 since the cameras were installed. The headline should read, “More Cameras to Capture More Revenue for the City.”

So sorry to the folks that have no consideration to the life and limb of other drivers. I say put in more cameras and ignore the whiners. Having driven in Spokane since 1958 there is one golden rule we tell all visitors: don’t move on green until you have checked all four ways. A momentary hesitation may save you your life. The first one in to the intersection is taking their life in their own hands due to the stupidity of some foolish drivers.
Of the hundreds of cities I have driven in, Spokane has a very unhealthy edge of drivers with little to no compassion for others using the roadway.

Its a scam they are saving up the money for the Otto Zehm punitive damages.

Ok, this is the first time I have added a comment… I know about the red light cameras my husband got nailed last summer hehehehe… Last week I went to get a coffee, and as usual I pulled out on to Frances going East and going about 25 miles an hour and started to stop for a red light. What do you know I see this really big DODGE in my rear view mirror way too close. If I didn’t almost cross the white line they would have hit me.. I hate Spokane roads. People do not pay attention to other drivers. I have seen more people blow the 4 way stop at Lincoln and Standard, I was almost a victim there too.. I have learned to watch everyone else.,

Sitting at the light at Monroe a Montgomery today and a cop car comes rolling up to the red light opposite and just rolls on thru the light he was 1/2 way across the intersection before he turned on his lights.

Who wouldn’t want to increase safety at intersections?

The problem is these cameras are not effective at doing that. It’s not just data from Spokane, but from other cities where the cameras have been installed and in some cases it has increased accidents.

    Just more government bloat.
