Freeman girls pleased with 2B tournament draw

Top teams on other side of girls bracket

When the Freeman girls basketball team’s name was drawn for the 1A state tournament bracket, coach Ashlee Taylor was more than pleased.

“We have a good game for us,” said Taylor, whose Scotties (22-1) take on Zillah at 7:30 p.m. when the tournament begins Wednesday at the SunDome in Yakima.

Freeman and Zillah have a common opponent. Lakeside (Nine Mile) topped Zillah 36-20 at Zillah in late December. Freeman took two of three games from its Northeast A League rival.

“I have to say the other side of the bracket seems pretty hard,” Taylor said. “There will be upsets like always so it will be interesting.”

Lakeside (21-3) opens against Toledo at 2.

Defending state champ Seattle Christian (21-2) was ranked first in the final poll, and Lynden Christian, which took fourth a year ago, was second. Freeman, which lost a heartbreaking one-point decision to Seattle Christian in the semifinals, is ranked third.

Seattle Christian and Freeman are in opposite brackets.

For the boys, Freeman (18-5) will open against Nooksack Valley at 12:30 and Lakeside (11-13) will meet Granger in the first game at 9 a.m.

Vashon Island, the defending state champ, and runner-up King’s return.
