Coming Wednesday: Girls and boys basketball teams from the 2B classification will take up residence in the Spokane Arena starting Wednesday.
The State 2B girls tournament includes defending champion Colfax. Senior Kayla Johnson has quite a history of state titles with the Bulldogs and apparently it’s in her genes. Her father played on the 1979 state champions for Colfax. Correspondent Mike Vlahovich has that story for Wednesday’s paper.
On the boys side, columnist John Blanchette looks into the long-awaited B tournament debut by Soap Lake.
Zags lonely on West Coast
College basketball: The Gonzaga men’s and women’s teams stick out like a sore thumb on the West Coast.
The Bulldogs men are the only ranked team from Washington, Oregon or California, remaining at No. 18 in the latest Associated Press poll released Monday. The ESPN/USA Today poll has GU ranked 14th.
In the women’s poll, Gonzaga moved up two places to No. 17. The only other West Coast team in the women’s poll is Stanford, which remained No. 2.

Spoiler return coming soon
Auto racing: NASCAR president Mike Helton says the series is on track to remove the wings from the cars very soon.
While Helton didn’t provide a specific date, he said Monday that NASCAR is hoping “within the next two or three races” it will be time to put more traditional spoilers back on the cars.
That timeline coincides with the March 28 race at Martinsville that most teams have expected to be the spoiler debut.
Speaking at Texas Motor Speedway’s media day Monday, Helton said he expects NASCAR to have “a race or two” already with the spoiler by time the series is at the 11/2-mile Texas track April 18.
