In brief: Gunman fires shots into apartment

Police continue to search for a gunman who fired a shot through an apartment wall Saturday in Spokane Valley that struck the metal post of the bed where a 3-year-old girl was sleeping.

The girl’s mother found the bullet when she pulled back the girl’s covers to check on her after the shooting and the bullet fell to the floor, Spokane Valley police spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan said in news release.

The incident was reported at 10:25 p.m. Saturday. Officers were dispatched to the apartments located at 15917 E. Sprague Ave. by a man who reported someone shooting at his apartment from the parking lot below.

The shooter was described as white, in his late 20s, 6 feet tall and thin. He had tattoos of a spider’s web on his neck.

Bicyclist killed near busy intersection

A bicyclist was hit and killed by a pickup truck Monday evening in downtown Spokane.

The victim was rushed by ambulance to the hospital with critical injuries, where he later died, according to KHQ News. The collision occurred near the intersection of Sprague Avenue and Division Street.

Police say the pickup driver initially fled the scene, but later returned. The driver may have been under the influence of alcohol, police said, and could face charges of vehicular manslaughter.

The intersection was expected to be closed late into the night as an accident reconstruction team investigated.

Airport board job deadline extended

The deadline to apply for a vacancy on the Spokane Airport Board has been extended to 1 p.m. Friday.

The seven-member board, which meets at 9 a.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, oversees Spokane International Airport, the Felts Field airport and Airport Business Park.

The vacancy occurred Feb. 28 when Vice Chairman John Wagner completed his second three-year term, the longest anyone is allowed to serve. His is one of three appointments controlled by Spokane County commissioners.
