EWU to open ’10 at Nevada

Eastern Washington University will open its 2010 football season on Sept. 2, with a nonconference game against Nevada in Reno.

The Eagles are working on the possibility of playing their Sept. 18 home game against Division II power Central Washington at Qwest Field in Seattle.

EWU athletic director Bill Chaves said the Eagles are scheduled to play Oregon State in Corvallis on Aug. 31, 2013. The Beavers bowed out of a 2010 game against Eastern in favor of a game against TCU.

The Eagles also have a contract in place to open their 2012 season at Idaho.

Hockey

The Nelson Leafs used a five-goal first period – including the sixth goal of the postseason by Brett McKinnon – to romp to a 6-3 victory and a 2-0 series lead over the visiting Spokane Braves in KIJHL playoff action.

Brycen Fischer, Jesse Collins and Rance Hughes scored for the Braves. The series best-of-7 shifts to Spokane for Games 3 and 4.

Golf

Freshman Victoria Fallgren finished tied for second place and helped the Gonzaga Bulldogs finish fourth overall at the Fresno (Calif.) State Classic at the Copper River Country Club.

Fallgren finished the 54-hole event at 1-over-par 217. Cristina Corpus of San Jose State was the medalist at 214.

UC Davis edged San Jose State 880-882 to win the team title. GU finished with a 903.

Eastern Washington was last in the 14-team tourney with a 1,014. Kellie Holmstedt’s 241 paced the Eagles.

•The Gonzaga men placed 13th out of 15 teams at the Braveheart Classic in Beaumont, Calif. Derek Cheney’s 11-over 227 led the Bulldogs.

Arizona won the team title – led by medalist Tarquin Macmanus’ 6-under 210.

Awards

Oregon Ducks freshman Allie Burger, a Shadle Park graduate, was named the Pac-10 player of the week in softball.

In four games at the Cathedral City Classic near Palm Springs, Calif., Burger hit .800.

•Whitworth junior Rachel Burns was the Northwest Conference player of the week in women’s tennis after posting a 4-0 record in singles play.

•Idaho’s Lachlan Reed (men) and Gabriela Niculescu (women) were named tennis players of the week in the Western Athletic Conference.

Reed, a junior, went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. Niculescu, a senior, went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.
