Celebration marks station’s anniversary
The newest fire station in the Elk area, Camden Station 11 is a year old. Station 11 covers the part of Elk that is in Pend Oreille County, and thus, is part of the South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue. An open house celebration on the one-year anniversary is scheduled March 17 at 6:30 p.m.
Station 11 is located at the corner of Dunn and Allen roads. Everyone is welcome to take an informal walk through, and members of Station 11, and its auxiliary will be available to hear comments or answer questions. For information or to volunteer, call Walt Johnston at (509) 496-3995.
•Speaking of fire stations, the Fertile Valley Station 71 will host a breakfast burrito or pancake breakfast at the station to raise funds to help with some finishing touches at Camden Station 11. The breakfast benefit is scheduled March 21 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Station 71, 11 Jermain Road just off Fertile Valley Road. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids under 12. The volunteers of the SCOPE Elk office (Sheriff Community Oriented Policing Efforts) invite all area residents to visit their office at the Inland Grange on Nelson and Conklin Roads. The office is open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Membership meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. For more information, call Mary Enquist at (509) 292-9457.
•Elk SCOPE host a community service presentation “Gang Awareness” for parents, guardians, educators and area residents on March 13 at 9:30 a.m. The presentation is sponsored by Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council, and the speaker will be Bailey Roberts, gang prevention community organizer.
•The Elk Music Association and the Pend Oreille Players Association Board met at the Pend Oreille Playhouse in Newport in February. They discussed the possibility of bringing theatric entertainment to the Elk Community Park this summer. There may be some short skits at Elk Pioneer Days to help promote the Playhouse productions and possible theatric performances under the stars at Elk Park. The golf courses are open, plants are popping through the mulch and the birds are making a lot of noise. It’s the first week in March, and it feels like spring! Time to get those lawn and garden tools cleaned up and plan those gardens.
