The Spokesman-Review

TACOMA — A layup at the end of overtime gives No. 1-ranked Federal Way a one-point victory over Gonzaga Prep at the boys State 4A basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome on Thursday.

Gonzaga Prep went on a 20-1 run in the second half to come back and take the lead but Federal Way hit a 3-point shot by Jerry Duckworth at the buzzer in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Parker Kelly’s two free throws with 13.3 seconds left gave the Bullpups a one-point lead before a layup by Isiah Umipig won it for the Eagles.

Excellent game between two top teams. The only lament is that it didn’t occur in the finals.

I’ve never understood, and still don’t understand why with 2 seconds left, and a three point lead, you simply don’t foul the offensive player before a shot , give him 2 free throws, poof, game over. Why,oh why, oh why let him shoot a three for the tie………I see it all the time, and I’ll never, never , never understand why.

Angus: spot on. My sentiments exactly. FW was mixing quite a few FTs. So put them on the line and draw the foul and finish them off.
