Time to look ahead

Most of us over a certain age have, at one time or another wished we could go back to a gentler, better time in life.

But just as we wish for going back in time we know that the circumstances, choices and decisions in that past life are what led us to our current situation. We can’t act like the kids and yell “do over” and get a second chance or another opportunity. We have to do what responsible individuals do, determine our circumstances and resources, decide what our goals are, and then create and follow a plan to achieve those goals.

It appears to me that some on the Spokane Valley City Council want to yell “do over.” They want to set aside years of hard work by citizens, city staff and elected officials; hard work that began with incorporation efforts, then developing a vision, and finally a revitalization plan.

This new council is not even attempting to provide a new direction or future for Spokane Valley. This council is bent on throwing out all plans, returning the city to the past, to the same mish- mash zoning, the same lack of identity and same lack of vision we began with.

If the City Council believes our current plan is not valid, it needs to act in a responsible way. The council needs to hold our current plan up to public scrutiny, hold community meetings, study sessions and public hearings, then choose a set of goals.

When that’s done, change the plan or even develop a new plan to meet those goals. Don’t use political maneuvering to throw the current plan out in a vain attempt to return to the past. Don’t leave the city without plan or direction while yelling for a “do over.”
