State 2B Girls

Tacoma Baptist 49, Entiat 40

The Crusaders (21-3) looked ready to coast to a fifth-place finish at the tournament, but they had to endure a furious comeback by the Tigers (14-9) before finally earning the 49-40 victory.

Melanie Shank scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half, but it was a combination of post players Jennifer Rea and Alyssa Wolf who secured the win, combining to score 24 points for the Crusaders. Wolf added nine rebounds and hit two critical free throws down the stretch.

Taylor Montgomery and Micaiah Hodge each scored 14 to lead Entiat, which outscored the Crusaders 18-10 in the third quarter to close an 11-point deficit to two by quarters’ end, 33-31.

Tacoma Baptist quickly built a five-point lead in the fourth, and kept it that way before pushing the advantage to nine by the final whistle.

Faced with a 1-and-1 with 6 seconds left on the clock and leading Liberty Bell by just one, Reardan freshman Kelsey Moos made both free-throw attempts and the Mountain Lions (17-7) could only get off a two-pointer before time expired, giving the Indians (20-4) a 47-46 victory in the fourth-place game.

Moos finished with a game-high 17 points, but sophomore Liz Flowers played a vital role for the Indians as well. With the Indians trailing by three with 2:26 remaining, Flowers converted a bucket and the ensuing free throw to knot the score at 42. She then registered a block on LB’s next possession, before putting the Indians ahead for good with a bucket off her miss at the free-throw line.

Flowers finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Chantel Heath added 10 points for Reardan.

Leading the Lions was Mariah Clements with 17 points, but the senior wing passed up a 3-pointer on their final possession, kicking the ball inside to Shelby Scott, who converted the layin but left the Lions one point short of Reardan as time expired.
