Streaking Cougars win again

Leadoff hitter Garry Kuykendall went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs batted in to power the streaking Washington State Cougars to a 10-4 baseball victory over the Utah Utes at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman on Saturday.

The Cougars (9-0) are off to their best start since the 1988 season. They have their first nine-game winning streak since 1993.

James Wise started for WSU and allowed three runs on six hits in 42/3 innings. Reliever Richie Ochoa (1-0) was credited with the win. He allowed one run in one inning. Paris Shewey closed out the game with three shutout innings – giving up one hit – to pick up his first save of the season.

Bryn Card (1-1) took the loss for Utah (5-5). He allowed seven runs in three innings.

•Andy Hunter ripped a pair of doubles and drove in three runs, Drew Heid hit a solo home run and added a triple in four trips to the plate and starter Ryan Carpenter (1-1) allowed three runs on three hits in seven innings to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-4) to a 12-5 non-conference romp over the Centenary Gents (5-5) in Shreveport, La.

•The Whitworth Pirates and the Menlo Oaks splits a non-conference doubleheader in Atherton, Calif.

Greg Hata belted a solo homer, Kyle Krustangel drove in a run and Ben George allowed one run in five innings to help the Pirates earn a 2-1 victory in the opener.

In the second game, Menlo (6-7) broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run fourth inning and breezed to a 7-1 win.

•The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (0-2) dropped a pair of games in The Dalles, Ore.

Clackamas CC scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and went on to defeat CCS 9-3.

In the nightcap, Linn-Benton managed just three hits but still pulled out a 4-2 victory. Taylor King had a solo home run for CCS.

Men’s basketball

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch had no answer for Clackamas’ Chehales Tapscott during the first day of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges tournament in Pasco.

Tapscott amassed 28 points and 32 rebounds to lead the Cougars (22-5) to a 65-55 victory over the Sasquatch (21-6).

Chris Pynch scored 17 to top CCS, while Griffon Jones contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds.

CCS will play Shoreline (19-6) in a loser-out game today at noon.

Men’s golf

Austin Hart carded a 5-over-par 221 to tied for 16th place and help guide the Washington State Cougars to a tie for sixth place at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.

Texas State won the team title in the 54-hole, 16-team event with a 12-over 876 – four strokes better than Oklahoma. WSU shot 888.

Baylor’s Joakim Mikkelsen was the medalist with a 3-under 213.

Softball

The North Idaho Cardinals (19-11) swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers in La Grande, Ore.

Lauren Maloney homered twice and drove in three runs to lead NIC to a 7-3 win in the opener and Alyssa Hawley and Juliann Hartnett each went 2 for 4 and both scored two runs to power the Cardinals to a 9-2 win in the second game.

•The Pacific Lutheran Lutes (4-3, 2-0) swept the Whitworth Pirates (0-2, 0-2) 4-3 and 10-4 in Northwest Conference play in Parkland, Wash.

Lacey Kerr had three of Whitworth’s nine hits on the day.

Track and field

Alex Hymel and Joy Shufeldt notched NCAA provisional qualifying marks as the Whitworth Pirates opened the season by winning nine events at the Willamette Opener in Salem, Ore.

Hymel had a winning throw of 190 feet, 1 inch. Shufeldt won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36 minutes, 57.66 seconds.

•Former Community Colleges of Spokane standout Eric Burck (2007) – now running for Concordia (Ore.) – won the men’s 5,000-meter run at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. Burck clocked a 14:33.22.

•Jeremy Klas broke an Idaho Vandals school record when he cleared 17-73/4 in the men’s pole vault at the Husky Last Chance qualifier meet in Seattle.

Lucas Pope held the previous record at 17-61/4.
