Pasco mayor resigns to wed Virginia fiance

Pasco’s mayor is saying goodbye to the city she helped lead for about a decade to follow her heart and new fiance.

An emotional Mayor Joyce Olson announced her resignation at Monday’s City Council meeting. Her last day is March 31.

“It’s happy news for me, but sad because I’m leaving,” she told her fellow council members.

Pasco’s first female mayor will be moving to Norfolk, Va., to join her new fiance. Olson became engaged to William Mathews, a Virginia chiropractor and schoolteacher, around Valentine’s Day. The two attended the same Connecticut high school and reconnected while they helped plan their 40th high school reunion last year, she said.

Olson said she expected to give the city more notice, but she sold her house Friday, after only having it on the market for two hours.

Mayor pro tem Matt Watkins will step in to serve April 1.

“The mayor is in love,” Watkins said. “That’s neat.”
