In brief: Meeting tonight on garden plans

MILLWOOD – Millwood Presbyterian Church is helping lead an effort to put in a community garden on the southwest corner of Argonne and Maringo on land owned by Inland Empire Paper Co. An organizational meeting is planned tonight at 7 p.m. at The Crossing Youth Center, 8919 E. Euclid Ave.

Plans for the site include individual plots for residents, row crops that will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank and a border of native wildflowers. The meeting is for residents who want to learn more about how to participate and share ideas they may have about how to best use the site. For more information, call the church at (509) 924-2350.

Food distribution Friday at church

MILLWOOD – Second Harvest will distribute produce and fresh food from its mobile food bank truck in the parking lot of Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, on Friday, from noon to 2 p.m.

Food is available for anyone in need of assistance. No appointment or documentation is necessary, but participants must be present in order to receive food, and are encouraged to bring a box for their food.

Bluegrass concert Saturday at U-Hi

SPOKANE VALLEY – University High School will host a bluegrass concert Saturday, from 7 to 10 p.m., sponsored by the Inland Northwest Bluegrass Association.

The concert will feature Custer’s Grass Band, formed in Spokane in 1973, and John Reischman and the Jaybirds, out of Vancouver, B.C.

Tickets for the show are $15 per person; free for children 12 and younger.

McIntosh Grange plans breakfasts

ROCKFORD – The McIntosh Grange, on the corner of First Street and Lake Avenue, will hold its monthly pancake breakfast Sunday, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

On Tuesday, the Grange will have the first Bingo Night from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Pancake breakfasts are the second Sunday of each month and Bingo Night will be held the third Tuesday of every month.

Horsemen’s group plans fundraiser

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Gentlemen on Horseback will host a banquet at Timber Creek Buffet, 9211 E. Montgomery Ave. in Argonne Village, March 21 at 6 p.m.

The banquet will be an opportunity for the community to meet this group of men who have been riding together since 1948 and learn about their annual ride, beginning June 20 just north of Chewelah.

Cost for the banquet is $12.39 at the door.

Theater plans to run classic movies

RIVERSIDE – Classic Movies at the Bing will begin at the Bing Crosby Theater on March 23.

The classic films will be shown at 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights, with the exception of the final film. Admission is a $5 donation at the door.

Films to be shown include: “Casablanca” on March 23; “The Glenn Miller Story” on March 30; “The Thin Man” on April 6; “Philadelphia Story” on April 20; and “High Society” on May 3.

The final movie will be shown on Bing Crosby’s birthday and doors will open at 6 p.m. Filmgoers are invited for refreshments and a slice of birthday cake before the film.
