Vandals give Akey extension

College football: Nearly three months after guiding the Idaho football team to a landmark triumph in the Humanitarian Bowl, Robb Akey has agreed in principle to a contract extension.

The Lewiston Tribune reported Friday that Akey and the university’s administration came to an agreement this week. It’s not known the length of the extension or Akey’s salary increase.

Akey declined to elaborate Friday afternoon. During the Vandals’ Pro Day, he told the Tribune, “We needed to come to an agreement on what the contract was going to be, to get it extended so that it would be a good thing so we can keep taking this thing forward.”

The deal still must be approved by the Idaho State Board of Education.

Akey, whose $258,187 salary was lowest in the Western Athletic Conference last year, is 11-26 in three years in Moscow after engineering a massive turnaround in 2009.

The Vandals capped an 8-5 year with a last-second win over Bowling Green in the H-Bowl. It was UI’s first postseason victory since 1998.

Boise State fires Graham

Men’s college basketball: Greg Graham has been fired as head coach at Boise State.

Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier announced the decision, saying it was time for a change in leadership. The move comes one day after the Broncos were trounced by Utah State 84-60 in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

Graham had a 142-112 record in eight seasons with the Broncos. He led them to a WAC championship two years ago, but the team struggled this year, finishing 15-17 overall and 5-11 in conference play.

Bleymaier said Graham has been placed on administrative leave and relieved of his coaching duties. He has one year remaining under a contract signed two years ago.
