Priest River family answers the call

OUTSTANDING – Bugles, barks, grunts and squeals must have been appropriate table talk at Misty Waggener’s house in Priest River.

Waggener won the women’s division in the World Elk Calling Championships in Reno, Nev., last weekend – the latest in a long line of elk talk titles for her and her family at the event sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Leupold.

Waggener is a training manager at Panhandle State Bank in Sandpoint, where she occasionally rises to the call of perking up a business meeting.

Elk talk came naturally to her 17 years ago when her dad, Rockie Jacobsen, had her to try out his now-patented Tone Top Mouth Call Diaphragm. She creamed the boys in the World Championships youth division three times before moving into the Women’s Division in 1998.

By the way, Jacobsen is a three-time RMEF World Champion elk caller. Misty plans to join him briefly on Saturday at his Bugling Bull Game Calls booth at the Big Horn Show.

But Misty says her true calling is in the wild, luring bull elk during the fall bowhunting seasons with her husband, Casey.

Fly fishing school a good catch

OUTCLASS – The annual Fly Fishing School taught by the Spokane Fly Fishers begins Thursday, 7 p.m., and runs weekly through April 29 at St. Francis School, 1104 W. Heroy.

In addition to the evening sessions on all phases of fly fishing and local fishing information by local experts, the school includes three weekend casting clinics.

Even better: The club leads fishing trips to familiarize members with the region’s waters.

Cost: $100 for adults, $60 for youths 12-16.

Film tour features adrenaline sports

OUTSEE – Radical Reels, the extreme sports off-shoot of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, will be shown Tuesday, 6 p.m., at the Panida Theater in Sandpoint. Tickets: $12.

A total of 10 films will feature skiing, climbing, kayaking, downhill skateboarding, snowboarding and mountain biking in the only Northwest stop for the Radicals tour before it heads to 15 other states.
