Sports in brief: Idaho, Boise St. rivalry on ESPN2

College football: The rest of the nation can share in the fun that is the Boise State-Idaho game.

The Nov. 12 game, a Friday, in Moscow will be televised by ESPN2, the Western Athletic Conference announced Monday.

The league will have 10 games on the ESPN family of networks, including a Thursday night game on Sept. 2 featuring USC at Hawaii.

Boise State will be on ESPN or ESPN2 at least four times, including home games against Oregon State (Sept. 25), Louisiana Tech (Oct. 26) and Fresno State (Nov. 19).

Gamble’s son dies in combat

Garrett W. Gamble, the son of former Spokane Chiefs goalie Troy Gamble, has died while serving in the Marines in Afghanistan.

Gamble died after he stepped on a mine-type device while patrolling during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Troy Gamble was a goaltender for the Chiefs from 1986-88 winning 53 games in two seasons.

Pujols for Ryan? Drivel, says GM

Baseball: Albert Pujols for Ryan Howard? Let’s just say the MVP sluggers don’t plan to pack their bags anytime soon.

Talk of a megatrade kept baseball buzzing Monday following an ESPN report the Philadelphia Phillies were thinking about asking the St. Louis Cardinals if they’d like to swap star first basemen.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. denied his team had discussed a trade and used “lies” and “ridiculous” and “irresponsible” to describe the report, which ESPN based on unidentified sources.
