Spokane teams win state titles

Four members of the Spokane Young Americans youth hockey program have won state championships and three of the teams will advance to national competition.

The Spokane Jr. Chiefs U12 Pee Wee A team is headed to Reston, Va., April 6-10 with a 44-8-1 record after going 6-0 in the Washington State Tier 2 Championships in Spokane last weekend. The players: Tanner Loucks, Tanner Moyer, Mitchell Knoles, Conor McKenna, Brandon Davis, Connor McIntosh, Paxton Malone, Josh Chamberlin, Jake Kelly, Vadim Smelik, Jared Gaylord, Brenden Odell, Sage Heyn, Jake Holden, Kasey Peach, Brady Murphy, Ashton Atwood, Noah Trosine, Mike Jensen and Nicholas Ketola. The coaches are Travis Knoles and Dan Holden.

The U18 Spokane Jr. Chiefs Midget team will be in Rochester, N.Y., April 7-11 after going 5-0 and beating Tacoma 3-0 in its championship game to improve its record to 33-12-5. The players: Reed Baker, Mike Oien, Nick Othmer, Dustin Pierce, Travis Condron, Krys Haas, Cameron Kridler, Weston Hill, Logan Rogers, Dillon Hashimoto, Lex Silvrants, Ryan Felvarg, John Ramer, DJ Maxey, Kylan Hennessy, Paxton Bell, Barry Silva, Scott Biglow. They are coached by Jay Oien, Corey Condron and Brad Baker.

The U16 team also qualified for nationals by winning its state title.

The Spokane Jr. Chiefs U10 Squirt Major team won the State Gold Cup tournament in the Tri-Cities last month, beating the Seattle Jr. Thunderbirds 5-3 in the title game. There is no national tournament for the Squirts. The team has a 31-14-5 record. The players: Jordan Mitchell, Ryan Moore, Andrew Clark, J.T. Neely, Luke Gallagher, Ethan Florko, Carter Jones, Hayden Dick, Riley McFarland, Desmond Parisotto, Dawson Tritt, Karson Peach, Kyle Knoles, Brayden Leifker-Lloyd, Trail Thompson and Jason Pichette. The coaches are Nathan Pichette, Mike Tritt, Delwyn Dick and J.P. Jones.

Football

Calvin Odell, an All-Great Northern League linebacker from Pullman, has signed a letter of intent with Montana Tech, the Orediggers announced.

The 6-foot, 195-pounder was also Pullman’s leading rusher his senior year. He is a three-time all-academic pick and was a team captain.

Matt Kriz, an Idaho 4A All-State selection at linebacker from Timberlake, has signed a letter of intent with Carroll College, Saints coach Mike Van Diest announced.

The 6-2, 210-pound Kriz was also an All-North Idaho and two-time All-Intermountain League selection. He earned three letters in football and track and field and two in basketball and is a member of the National Honor Society with a 3.7 grade-point average.

Hockey

Twenty-eight teams are scheduled to compete at the 29th annual Spokane Oldtimers spring hockey tournament, which begins its three-day run Friday at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Spokane’s entries are Heros & Zeros and Spokane Police-Fire.

Play begins at 1:30 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m. Saturday and next Sunday. Admission is free.

Powerlifting

Seven members of the Dave Smith’s Powerlifting Team from Kellogg qualified for the World Alliance of Bench and Deadlift World Championships Nov. 16-21 in Las Vegas with their performances in a meet in Missoula.

Brother and sister Josh and Ashley Smith and Jacob Harris led the showing by collecting outstanding lifter awards.

Josh was first in the 15-16-year-old teen division at 148 pounds, pulling 335 pounds. Ashley pulled 260 in the teen women’s weight class. Harris won two outstanding awards in the 16-17 teen 220-pound division with a 263 bench and 474 deadlift.

Other qualifiers were Darrell Andrews, masters men 47-53 220-pound class with a 420 bench; Adam Cortinas, open men 181-pound class, 360 deadlift; Larry Roos, masters men 220, 412 deadlift; and David Lenius of Coeur d’Alene, open men’s 165, 435 bench.

Garrison Harris and Tommy Rahm are the coaches.

Skiing

Elyse Burandt, 12, of the Spokane Ski Racing Association, successfully defended the women’s overall title at the Buddy Werner Championships last weekend at Mount Hood, Ore.

Burandt, who attends Sacajawea Middle School and also won the title last year on Mount Spokane, captured the giant slalom with a combined time of 1 minute, 54.78 seconds and placed second in the slalom to claim the overall title.

Matt Duchow and Caroline Suppiger of the Schweitzer Alpine Racing School also made the podium with a second and third, respectively.

Others with top-20 finishes: Kenny Collins, SARS, sixth; Brecken Schrankel, SSRA, 12th; Abby Howard, SARS, 13th; Jayce Bailey, SARS, 15th; Nicholas Dixon, SSRA, 16th, Halle Cambell, SARS, 19th; and Claire Organick, SSRA, 20th.

Soccer

Tanya Baker, an All-Great Northern League defender from Cheney, is among eight who have signed letters of intent with Eastern Washingto University, Eagles women’s coach George Hageage announced.

Also slated to join the Eagles in the fall are Siara Byers, North Kitsap, Wash.; Erin Bourguignon, Mercer Island, Wash.; Megan Bolmes, Mill Creek, Wash.; Torri Sitzman, Hockinson, Wash.; Brianna Brannan, Kamiakin; Melissa Bishop, Portland; and Dashia Huff, Walla Walla Community College from Kennewick.

Track and field

Chanel James, a sprinter from Tacoma who won three events at the NWAACC Championships last spring for Community Colleges of Spokane, has signed a letter of intent to compete for the Washington State women, Cougars coach Rick Sloan announced.

James won the 100, long jump and triple jump for CCS and finished second in the 200. At Wilson of Tacoma, she was a two-time State 4A champion in the 100 and once in the 200 and was twice a top-three finisher in the long jump. Her lifetime bests are 11.81 seconds in the 100, 24.53 in the 200 and 18 feet, 81/4 inches in the long jump.
