Whits win two games

Whitworth doubled its win total by sweeping two games in the Tucson Invitational softball tournament Monday in Arizona.

Ashley Carey and Jamie Brunner drove in two runs each for the Pirates (4-9) in a 9-7 win over North Central (Ill.). One of Carey’s RBIs came in her first home run of the season. Heather Hesselgesser and Tori Erickson had two RBIs each in a 10-9 win over British Columbia.

College golf

Community Colleges of Spokane men and women won their divisions in the Columbia Basin College Invitational at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland.

Led by Corey Meyers’ (Deer Park) runner-up finish, CCS had six of the top 10 scorers in fashioning a 597 total for a 13-stroke win over Walla Walla.

Branden Dalton of North Idaho was medalist with a 3-over-par 147, a stroke better than Meyers. NIC finished fourth.

CCS had four of the top five women, with Alexa Bell and Darby Moberg, who had a hole-in-one Sunday, sharing second with 166s, as the Sasquatch scored 498 for a 38-stroke win over NIC. The Cardinals’ Ashley Burke was seventh with a 171.

GSL boys golf

Peter Gullickson of Lewis and Clark and Garrett Howard of Ferris matched 1-under-par 70s to share medalist honors in the Shriver Cup at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Gullickson and three teammates who finished in the top seven led LC No. 1 to a 25-stroke win over Central Valley.

GSL soccer

Justin Gates found the lower left corner of the net from 20 yards out at the 34-minute mark to give Gonzaga Prep a 1-0 win over visiting Lewis and Clark in Greater Spokane League action.

In other matches, Chris Rothrock poked in a goal three minutes in and Todd Newman scored at 39 minutes in Shadle Park’s 2-0 win over Mt. Spokane at Albi Stadium. … Central Valley needed two late goals from Trevor Del Medico, the first on a crossing pass from Joseph Guerrinha with one minute left in regularion, the second after picking up a loose ball with 10 seconds left in overtime, to overcome visiting Ferris 2-1. … Alex Talley’s left-footed kick from just outside the 18-yard box at 58 minutes after East Valley got behind the defense gave the Knights a 2-1 win at University. … Gabe Arias had three goals and Ben Doggett two to lead Mead to a 9-0 win over Rogers at Albi.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock reassigned defensive back David Jones, wide receiver Joey Hew-Len, quarterback Chris Crane and offensive linemen Josh Leonard, Mike Donato and Casey Bulyca.

Also, wide receiver Aaron Fairooz was placed on the Other League Exempt list after he signed with Saskatchewan of the CFL.
