Mangis’ gem lifts Pirates

Jessica Mangis tossed a three-hit shutout and Lacey Kerr drilled her third home run of the season to lift Whitworth to a 5-0 win over Otterbein on Tuesday at the Tucson Invitational softball tournament.

The Pirates’ (5-9) only game of the tournament today was their fourth win in a row.

Mangis, who has been limited by injury since she beat nationally-ranked Linfield on March 14, scattered three singles and only faced a serious threat in the first inning when she stranded an Otterbein runner at third base. Mangis (2-3) struck out six and walked one.

Whitworth rallied for three runs in the third inning. Brittany Wisner and Kelsey Ayers had RBI singles before Kerr doubled home Ayers with the Pirates’ third run. Kerr then hit her third homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning.

College golf

Idaho men’s golfer Stefan Richardson finished in a tie for second at the Oregon Duck Invitational at the Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Ore.

Richardson shot a 5-under 211 for three rounds, tieing Eugene Wong of Oregon. Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki was the medalist with a 7-under 209.

Third-ranked Oregon won the team title, followed by No. 33 Arkansas and No. 25 Oregon State. Idaho was fourth and WSU fifth in the 13-team tournament.

WSU teammates Kevin Tucker and Nick Ellis finished in a tie for 10th.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock added 6-foot-3, 320-pound defensive lineman Richard Clebert to the roster.

Clebert collected 77 tackles in 38 career games at the University of South Florida.
