Anderson wins 400 hurdles

Defending NCAA intermediate hurdles champion Jeshua Anderson led Washington State’s efforts at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, winning the 400-meter hurdles in 49.64 seconds, good enough to lead the nation in the early going in the track and field season.

The Cougars women had success in the 1,500 meters as Lisa Egami set a personal best in 4:19.31 to finish atop her section before today’s final race.

•Community Colleges of Spokane’s Spencer Wordell finished the final day of Whitworth’s Buc Scoring Invite the same way he started it, leading the pack in the men’s decathlon and winning the event with a score of 6,081 points.

Wordell failed to win in the first four events, but took the 1,500-meter run in 4:30.54 to hold off Eastern Washington’s Brandon Lattin, who took second with 5,986 points. CCS teammate Carter Nell (5,904) was third.

EWU freshman Elise Jepsen won the women’s heptathlon, recording 3,994 points to beat out Eagles teammate Liz Cobb (3,804) and Whitworth’s Tera Prosser (3,511).

Baseball

Matt Argyropoulos went 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs as 11 Washington State players collected at least one hit in the Cougars’ 14-3 romp over Cal State Bakersfield (9-10) in Pullman.

Chad Arnold pitched six innings and gave up one run for the Cougars (13-5) to pick up the win.

Rusty Shellhorn (Central Valley) closed out the final three innings to earn the save.

•For the second straight game between Gonzaga and Utah Valley, both teams reached double digits, with UVU winning the nonconference rematch 21-17 in Orem, Utah.

Mark Castellitto followed up a five-hit day Thursday with four more against the Wolverines (7-9), as both teams collected 22 hits. The Zags (9-13) could not overcome an early deficit as starter Ryan Carpenter was chased in the second inning.

Carpenter allowed just two earned runs on eight hits, but left in the second trailing UVU 12-3.

•Community Colleges of Spokane struggled through the opening day of the East Region Invite, falling 4-3 to Lower Columbia CC (11-1) and 10-7 against Skagit Valley CC (10-2) in Pasco.

Quinn Holt led the Sasquatch (10-4) with four hits in their offensive surge against SVCC, but the Sasquatch saw a two-run lead evaporate in the top of the ninth inning as the Cardinals scored five in the frame.

Softball

Shelbie Medrano earned a shutout win in the opener and added two hits and four RBIs in the second game as visiting College of Southern Nevada (19-12, 15-10 Scenic West Athletic Conference) swept North Idaho (21-17, 14-12) 1-0, 7-5.

Amanda Krier had three hits and three RBIs in the second game for the Cardinals.

•Breanna Lookabill had the go-ahead RBI in a 2-0 Community Colleges of Spokane first-game victory over Walla Walla CC (6-9, 0-2 NWAACC). The CCS sophomore then drove in the winner in the nightcap with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to lift CCS (3-10, 2-0) to a 7-6 victory.

Shelby Bethel went the distance in the opener for the Sasquatch, allowing no runs on six hits to earn the win in the team’s conference opener.

Golf

The Eastern Washington women finished the Cal Poly/Lampkin Grip Women’s Match Play Championship with a 1-2 record after falling to Portland 3 and 2 on the final day of the tournament in Arroyo Grande, Calif.

The Eagles split their matches Thursday, losing 3 and 1 to Cal Poly before upending Cal State Bakersfield 3-2.
