Gasoline fumes ignite in Cheney basement

The Spokesman-Review
Two teenage boys suffered minor burns in a Sunday morning house fire that started when they were trying to pour gasoline into a gallon jug. The Cheney Fire Department responded to at 2:13 a.m. to the fire in the 900 block of Moyer Street. The teens were in a basement utility room when the pilot light on a water heater ignited the fumes from the gasoline, said Lt. Ken Johnson. The teens saw a flash and the house quickly filled with smoke. The teens and two other people in the house escaped, but two of the family’s pet cats were killed. A third cat, a dog and two turtles survived the fire. One teen was treated at the scene for minor burns. The other teen refused treatment.
