Roundup: Cougars shut out at home

Mike McCarthy threw an eight-hit shutout as Cal State Bakersfield beat Washington State 3-0 in nonconference baseball action Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

The Cougars (14-7) were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners as the Roadrunners earned a split of the four-game weekend series.

WSU had runners at third base in each of the first three innings and runners on base in seven of nine innings against McCarthy (2-2), but couldn’t break through.

Reliever Paris Shewey struck out a career-high five batters in 3 1/3 innings for the Cougars, and Brett Jacobs extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

WSU plays Gonzaga in Spokane on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Softball

Nicole Renteria’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave George Fox a 9-8 victory over Whitworth in Northwest Conference action in Newberg, Ore., snapping the Pirates’ eight-game winning streak.

Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed because of rain; no makeup date has been set. The teams might make up the game when Whitworth visits Oregon again at the end of April.

Whitworth (9-10, 3-8 NWC) trailed 8-3 after four innings, but scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and three in the seventh to force extra innings.

Jessica Dickson (2-2) took the loss, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits, though only two of the runs were earned.

Ashley Carey had three RBIs for the Pirates, including a two-run home run to tie the game. Sami Parr went 5 for 5, including a home run on the game’s first pitch. Jamie Brunner and Caty Lieseke also hit solo home runs for Whitworth.

Cross country

Washington State’s Andrew Kimpel finished 54th in the men’s junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Kimpel, a freshman out of North Central High School, completed the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 37 seconds. Kimpel was the fourth member of the USA Junior Cross Country team to finish.

Caleb Mwangangi Ndiku of Kenya won in 22:07.

Prep basketball

The State team beat the City team 84-71 in the All-State 1B/2B girls game Saturday at Seattle Christian High School in Seatac.

Asotin’s Shelby Barnes led the State team with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and was named the game’s most valuable player.

St. John-Endicott’s Kelsey Simon added 11 points for State.

Kayleigh Maltone had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the City team.

Colton’s Clark Vining coached the State team.
