Cougars rally to overcome Ducks

Matt Argyropoulos singled and scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by Patrick Claussen as Washington State (22-15, 6-7) came from behind to beat Oregon (28-14, 8-8) 3-2 in Pac-10 action Friday in Eugene, Ore.

The Cougars scored three runs in the eighth and ninth innings before Adam Conley earned the save by pitching a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

•Tommy Medica led Santa Clara with a 3-for-5 day, hitting a home run and finishing with two runs and three RBIs, as the Broncos (16-23, 2-10 West Coast Conference) hammered out 19 hits to beat Gonzaga (14-21-1, 2-7-1) 15-3 in Spokane.

Bulldogs ace Cody Martin could not make it out of the fifth inning, when the Broncos erupted for 12 runs and a 15-1 lead.

Santa Clara starter Nate Garcia went 72/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out nine for the win.

•Pierce Rankin homered to give Washington a 2-0 lead and the Huskies (22-19, 6-7) went on to a 4-2 Pac-10 victory over Stanford (21-15, 10-6) in Seattle.

Softball

Danielle Lawrie struck out 12 in five innings and No. 1 Washington (38-5, 10-3) made short work of Oregon State (22-25, 2-11), winning 13-1 in five innings of Pac-10 action in Seattle.

Four Huskies hitters had at least two hits and Hooch Fagaly added a three-run home run during a 10-run third inning.

•Amanda Edwards had three hits, including a home run, and earned the win in the second game as Community Colleges of Spokane (15-21, 10-10 NWAACC) split 5-4 decisions with Wenatchee Valley (30-7, 16-4) at SFCC.

Track and field

East Valley graduate Nick Atwood, running unattached, won the Bill McChesney Jr. 5,000 meters, the featured event at Friday’s session of the Oregon Relays in Eugene.

Atwood, a former Montana State runner, clocked 14 minutes, 3.98 seconds to beat a field that included Eastern Washington’s Paul Limpf (fourth, 14:20.94) and former North Central standout Jeff Howard of Boise State (ninth, 14:29.93).

EWU discus throwers David Howard (East Valley) and Erica Chaney (Gonzaga Prep) won their specialties with personal bests. Howard threw 166 feet, 9 inches and Chaney 155-6. Idaho’s Allix Lee-Painter ran 16:25.09 in the women’s 5,000 for seventh, the fastest in the Inland Northwest this spring.

•Whitworth’s Joy Shufeldt broke an 18-year-old school record, running 17:28.53 for second in the 5,000 meters during the brief first-day portion of the Duane Hartman Invitational at Spokane Falls, which continues today. Former Community Colleges of Spokane standout Jake Shanklin returned to win the men’s hammer at 208-8.

Rowing

For just the second time in 14 years, the Gonzaga women did not win the West Coast Conference title, falling to San Diego in the Varsity 8 race by 0.2 seconds as the Toreros ran a time of 6:43.6 to win their first title in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

USD scored 28 points with a win in the Varsity 4 and a second place in the Junior Varsity 8, just beating out the Bulldogs, who had two second-place finishes and a win in the Junior Varsity 8 for 26 points and second place.

Men’s basketball

Washington has picked up a pair of highly regarded recruits for the 2010-11 season out of Portland’s Jefferson High School.

The school confirmed it has received a national letter of intent from 6-foot-5 guard Terrence Ross. At a news conference earlier in the day at Jefferson High, 6-foot-9 forward Terrence Jones also announced he plans to attend Washington.

Jones averaged 32 points and 13 rebounds per game to help Jefferson to three state titles. Ross played at Jefferson as a sophomore before transferring to a school in Maryland.

•A high school teammate of Jones and Ross, Stephen Madison of Portland, also signed his letter of intent, electing to play for Don Verlin’s Idaho Vandals in the upcoming 2010-11 season.

Honors

Gonzaga men’s tennis player Roman Dojcak became the school’s first four-time All-West Coast Conference selection after being named to the All-WCC second team this season.

Also for the Bulldogs, Clare Dodge, Rikea Mehndiratta and Prue Teitzel were honorable mention in women’s tennis and Sage Suffecool and Stephanie Corie received honorable mention honors in women’s golf.

•Eastern Washington’s Nico Riego de Dios was named All-Big Sky second team in men’s tennis, while Kelsey Knight was honorable mention in women’s tennis.
