In brief: Gasol, Lakers beat Thunder in last second

NBA: Pau Gasol tipped in a missed jumper by Kobe Bryant with a half-second left and the Los Angeles Lakers survived a late comeback effort by host Oklahoma City and eliminated the Thunder 95-94 in Game 6 of the first-round playoff series Friday night.

The Lakers moved on when Russell Westbrook missed a desperation 3-pointer at the final buzzer. Bryant scored 32 points and Gasol had nine points and 18 rebounds, scoring his only basket of the second half at the end.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 26 points, while Westbrook had 21 points and nine assists.

Jazz beat Nuggets to clinch series: At Salt Lake City, Carlos Boozer had 22 points and 20 rebounds, rookie Wesley Matthews scored 23 and made a key block, and Utah pulled away late in the fourth quarter and beat the Denver Nuggets 112-104, winning the playoff series in six games. Chauncey Billups led Denver with 30 points and Anthony finished with 20 points on 6-for-22 shooting.

Hawks beat Bucks, force Game 7: Jamal Crawford scored 24 points, Joe Johnson added 22 and the Atlanta Hawks beat the Milwaukee Bucks 83-69 to force a seventh game in the first-round series. The Hawks outscored the Bucks 29-11 in the third quarter to take a 15-point lead. Carlos Delfino scored 20 for the Bucks.

•California firm sues Arenas for gun fees: A lawsuit claims Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas owes a Beverly Hills, Calif., company more than $70,000 for storing guns he bought and never picked up. Tactical Operations sued Arenas last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Santa Monica, Calif. The firm claims it obtained five Beretta pistols with silencers for Arenas in 2006.

Penguins own power play, beat Canadiens

NHL: Defensemen Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski each had a goal and an assist and the host Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-3 in the first game of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Sidney Crosby set up two goals, and Jordan Staal and Sergei Gonchar also scored as the Penguins’ improved power play went 4 for 4.

Wie takes second- round lead in Mexico

Golf: At Morelia, Mexico, Michelle Wie shot a 5-under-par 68 to take the second-round lead in the Tres Marias Championship at 12 under. Wie was a stroke ahead of Brittany Lincicome (67) and Ai Miyazato (72). Wendy Ward (Edwall, Wash.) shot a 7-over 80 for a two-day total of 153 and missed the cut.

Tway, Thompson top Champions Tour leaderboard: At Saucier, Miss., Bob Tway and 63-year-old Leonard Thompson shot 5-under 67s to share the first-round lead in the Champions Tour’s inaugural Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. Tom Purtzer, David Peoples, Brad Bryant and David Eger opened with 68s at Fallen Oak.

Kyle Busch wins pole at Richmond

Auto racing: Kyle Busch won the pole for tonight’s NASCAR race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway with a fast lap at 127.077 mph, easily beating David Reutimann (126.618) for the top spot.

Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon will start in the second row, followed by Ryan Newman, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick and Jamie McMurray.

•Keselowski dominates Nationwide race at Richmond: At Richmond, Va., Brad Keselowski led most of the last 192 laps and then rallied from fourth to win his second consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series race. Greg Biffle rallied from fifth to finish second. Jamie McMurray was third, followed by Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards.

Briscoe ends Power’s pole run at Kansas: A shift to the ovals meant a shift in power in the IndyCar Series. Australian Ryan Briscoe was the fastest qualifier at Kansas Speedway at Kansas City, Kan., ending Will Power’s bid for a record-tying fourth consecutive pole. Briscoe will start on the front row today with defending champion Scott Dixon.

Blind Luck wins Kentucky Oaks

Miscellany: Blind Luck tracked down Evening Jewel in the final yards to win the $500,000 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The heavy 6-5 favorite trailed early before roaring down the stretch to catch Evening Jewel at the wire in the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-old fillies.

Rachel Alexandra loses second straight race: Rachel Alexandra, the reigning Horse of the Year was beaten by a head in her return to Churchill Downs, losing a stretch duel to Unrivaled Belle in the $400,000 La Troienne Stakes. It was the 4-year-old filly’s second loss this year, both times as the heavy favorite.

Nadal wins, reaches Rome semifinal: Rafael Nadal defeated Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-1 to reach the Rome Masters semifinals. Nadal will next play Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who beat Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (6), 6-1.

Fernando Verdasco, a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4 winner over Novak Djokovic, will face David Ferrer, who cruised past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-1.

Henin overcomes Jankovic at Porsche GP: Justine Henin beat Jelena Jankovic 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 at Stuttgart, Germany, for a place in the Porsche Grand Prix semifinals. She will play Shahar Peer of Israel, who stopped Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-2.

Samantha Stosur also advanced to the last four with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Li Na of China. She will next face Anna Lapushchenkova in the other semifinal.

Leipheimer keeps Gila lead; Armstrong lurks, has child on way: Lance Armstrong had quite the eventful day at Silver City, N.M. The seven-time Tour de France champion revealed on Twitter that he’ll be a five-time father, then finished fifth in the third stage of the Tour of the Gila to help teammate Levi Leipheimer maintain his lead.

Armstrong finished 50 seconds back and was 25th in the overall standings with two days left.

Armstrong and his girlfriend, Anna Hansen, had their first child in June 2009. The cyclist also has three other children with his ex-wife, Kristen.
