Fernan considers uniforms

From Staff Reports

Parents and other people who attended an April parent-teacher association meeting discussed whether Fernan Elementary School students should wear uniforms.

According to the April 21 edition of the Fernan Elementary newsletter, other public schools in the Coeur d’Alene area have already adopted a uniform policy for their students, including Lakes Middle School, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy and Sorenson Elementary School.

The advantages are that uniforms would increase the focus on learning, encourage kids to take their studies more seriously, create unity, a sense of belonging and pride, signal a commitment to the school, minimize pressure to fit in, improve self-confidence, make getting ready for school less stressful, allow students more time in the morning for tasks such as breakfast, help alleviate tardiness and contribute to safety by making outsiders easy to identify on the school campus, the newsletter said.

The newsletter also argued that uniforms would cost less than regular clothes..

Principal Warren Olson has requested comments and ideas on the uniform issue. The parent-teacher association has scheduled a noon, May 13 meeting in the school library to discuss the topic further. in the Fernan Elementary library at noon.
