Zags rowers earn medals

The Gonzaga men won gold in the Novice 4+ and the women won the Novice 8+ and the Junior Varsity 8+ at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Lake Natoma outside Sacramento, Calif., on Sunday.

The Bulldog women won the Novice 8+ for the fourth time in five years and the Junior Varsity 8+ for the fourth time in six years. The women placed third in the Varsity 8+ and fourth in the Varsity 4+.

The men came in second in the Junior Varsity 8+, third in the Novice 8+ and fourth in the Varsity 8+. The Gonzaga men finished in third place for the Total Points Trophy.

Sam Cekovic, Liz Moore and Alissa Stempson were selected for the All-WIRA first team, while Paula Welly was chosen for the second team. For the men, Will Griffith was named to the All-WIRA second team.

Baseball

Nathan Johnson and Marlowe Peter each drove in two runs to help Whitworth beat Whitman 6-2 in Spokane to complete a three-game Northwest Conference sweep in the season finale for both teams.

Landon Scott went 3 for 4 for the Pirates (13-27, 10-14 NWC) to raise his batting average to an NWC-leading .468. Linfield’s Kelson Brown is second at .453, but statistics will not be final until the Wildcats complete postseason play.

•Oregon’s Zack Thornton held Washington State to one run over six-plus innings as the No. 17 Ducks beat the Cougars 6-1 in Pac-10 action in Eugene, Ore.

WSU (22-17, 6-9 Pac-10) scored its run when Ryan Peterson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.

•Santa Clara took advantage of three Gonzaga errors to earn a 6-1 West Coast Conference victory and series sweep in Spokane.

Mark Castellitto extended his hitting streak to 13 games for the Bulldogs (14-31-1, 2-9-1 WCC), who are idle until May 13.

•Sean Meehan scored on a wild pitch in the 15th inning to give Washington a 4-3 Pac-10 victory over Stanford in Seattle, completing the Huskies’ first three-game sweep of the Cardinal.

Neither team scored from the fifth inning until the game-winning run in the 15th. UW (24-19, 8-7 Pac-10) reliever Adam Cimber (5-2) pitched five innings of scoreless relief.

Stanford is 21-17, 10-8.

•Lewis-Clark State swept a doubleheader with Oregon Tech in Lewiston, giving coach Ed Cheff his 1,700th victory. Cheff, in his 34th season with the Warriors, is 1,700-428.

Softball

Danielle Lawrie pitched a three-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and Niki Williams drove in the game’s only run as No. 1 Washington beat Oregon State 1-0 in Pac-10 play in Seattle.

Lawrie (30-2) reached 30 victories for the third time in her career and is within 45 of the Pac-10 career strikeout record. She leads the nation with 17 shutouts.
