Withdrew Golfer Anthony Kim withdrew from The Players Championship because of an injured left thumb that could require surgery sooner than he anticipated. Kim said the ligament has become detached from his thumb.

Hired Rutgers will hold a news conference Thursday to introduce Mike Rice as its basketball coach after Rice coached Robert Morris to a close overtime defeat to Villanova.

Discussing Kentucky coach John Calipari and the University of Kentucky have begun “initial discussions” on restructuring the coach’s lucrative contract. The statement came just hours after reports surfaced that Calipari was interested in the coaching vacancy with the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.

Died Former NFL player and Georgia Tech star Nick Rogers has died in a one-car accident. He was 30. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office says Rogers was killed about 1:30 a.m. Monday when his car hit a utility pole in College Park, near Atlanta.

Transferring Iowa forward Aaron Fuller is transferring to Southern California and will sit out the upcoming season. Fuller averaged 9.7 points and 6.2 rebounds while starting 22 of 30 games last season for the Hawkeyes.

Training Gymnast Shawn Johnson surprised a group of elementary school students in her hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, by announcing she plans to train for the London Games in 2012. Johnson took time off from gymnastics after winning four medals in Beijing, but said repeatedly that she hadn’t ruled out returning.

Denied An associate of boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. denied in court that he shot at a man who argued with the boxer at a Las Vegas skating center last August. Ocie Harris said he was not guilty when asked for his plea to charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm into a vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon.

Adjourned A judge adjourned the drunken driving case against former Hofstra men’s basketball coach Tim Welsh until June 1. Welsh has pleaded not guilty to aggravated driving while intoxicated and other charges following his arrest Friday. He is accused of having a blood-alcohol reading over 0.18.
