Bethel nearly perfect as CCS wins twice

Shelby Bethel threw a five-inning no-hitter and picked up two wins as Community Colleges of Spokane (19-21, 14-10 NWAACC) swept visiting Blue Mountain (16-23, 9-15) 12-0, 13-3 in a softball doubleheader on Friday.

Bethel was one walk away from a perfect game in the opener. She had nine strikeouts and finished with 16 in the doubleheader.

•No. 1-ranked Salt Lake Community College (54-3, 42-3) swept visiting North Idaho College (32-26, 25-21) 5-0 and 3-1 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader.

NIC managed just five hits in the opener. Freshman outfielder Jessica Ross knocked in the Cardinals’ run in the second game. Meranda Wood led SLCC with three hits.

•Top-ranked Washington (41-5, 13-3) shut out No. 15 Stanford (33-15, 5-11) 8-0 in a Pac-10 Conference game in Seattle. Pitcher Danielle Lawrie (31-2) threw a no-hitter in the five-inning game, striking out 11.

Track and field

The University of Idaho swept the men’s and women’s hammer throws in the first day of the Vandal Jamboree at the Dan O’Brien Track and Field Complex.

Senior James Rogan heaved the hammer 216 feet to take first among the men by more than 17 feet over teammate Beau Whitney (198-4), also a senior. Sophomore Gabby Midles won the women’s event with a throw of 183-11.

The balance of the meet takes place today, starting with the men’s javelin at 10:30 a.m.

Baseball

UCLA pitcher Gerrit Cole, who was selected in the first round of the 2008 draft but opted to stay in college, limited Washington (25-20, 8-8 Pac-10) to two runs on three hits in eight innings as the visiting 12th-ranked Bruins (32-10, 8-8) topped UW 7-2.

Women’s golf

Idaho remained tied for 19th after the second round of the NCAA West Regional at the Stanford (Calif.) University Golf Course.

Idaho shot 314 to go with an opening 312 for 626, 41 strokes behind leader Arizona (585).

Teo Poplawski had Idaho’s low round with a 4-over-par 75. She has a 36-hole total 150 and is tied for 28th.
