U-Hi warms up for showdown

Had it not been for a pair of losses this week, the University softball team may have captured the Greater Spokane League championship on Friday.

University (15-4) knocked off GSL champ Mead (17-3) 7-3 at U-Hi. The teams will turn around and square off in the District 8 4A championship game Friday at Whitworth University after regular-season play ends Monday.

Brittnay Connor went 2 for 4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases to lead the Titans.

Elsewhere in the GSL, North Central (11-8), behind pitcher Echo Barline’s six-hitter, topped visiting Lewis and Clark (9-10) 6-1 to clinch the 3A No. 1 seed into the district playoffs. Kilee Brown went 2 for 2 with an RBI. LC’s Rachel Head went 3 for 4 and was a home run away from the cycle. … Rogers (6-13) scored seven runs in the first inning on its way to an 18-3 win in four innings at Shadle Park (7-12). Amber Ryan went 3 for 4 with two runs for the Pirates. … After being intentionally walked twice, Jenn Rambo hit a solo home run in the fifth to spark a 5-4 win by Gonzaga Prep (10-9) over visiting East Valley (6-13). Rambo had two stolen bases and scored twice. … Central Valley (8-11) rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3, come-from-behind win over Mt. Spokane (9-10). Jenna Gaskin doubled to drive in the winning run.

•Lake City (19-4, 9-3) clinched the 5A Inland Empire League title by sweeping visiting Post Falls (12-9, 5-7) 2-0 and 8-7 as regular-season play concluded. LC won the first game despite a no-hitter by Post Falls’ Richelle Ashburn. LC will play host to the regional tourney, which begins Wednesday. In openers, No. 1 seed LC takes on No. 4 Lewiston (5-11) and No. 2 Coeur d’Alene (20-6) faces No. 3 Post Falls. Both games are at 2. The winners meet in the championship game at 4 with the winner advancing to state. The losers meet in a loser-out game, also at 4.

•Intermountain League-leading Timberlake (11-8, 9-1) jumped out to a 5-1 lead before settling for a 6-3 win at Kellogg (7-5, 5-5). Sydney Malloy picked up the win in relief. Megan Hill led Timberlake with two hits and three runs.

•Colville (14-0, 12-0) captured the Great Northern League championship by sweeping visiting Deer Park (9-7, 3-7) 14-1, 11-0. Alison Holst and Mikala Carr each threw one-hitters, and Carr went 6 for 6 in the doubleheader with three RBIs. … Host Pullman (11-7, 8-4) swept a doubleheader from Cheney (7-10, 4-8), taking the first game 15-12 in 11 innings and rallying for three runs in the sixth for a 15-14 win in the second game. Katie Guettinger hit a two-run homer in the 11th and was 4 for 4 in the second. Amy Sterk of Pullman was 8 for 9 for the day. … Riverside (8-10, 5-7) swept host Medical Lake (1-17, 1-11) 14-1 and 2-0 with pitcher Megan Fisher winning both.

Riverside’s boys and Deer Park’s girls won at the Newport Relays.
