Malerie Briseno, 22, left, talks to her brother, 27-year-old Joseph “Jay” Briseno Jr., as their mother, Eva Briseno, watches at their home in Manassas Park, Va., last month. Associated Press photos

The mug at left shows Jay Briseno before his injury. The family photo at right was taken after Jay shipped out with the Army Reserves on his 20th birthday.

Eva Briseno massages her son’s foot at their home in Manassas Park, Va. Eva exercises Jay’s arms and legs daily and turns him every other hour to prevent bedsores. She and her husband quit their jobs to care for Jay after a bullet to the back of the head left him paralyzed, brain-damaged and blind. Jay’s father plans to form a home health care agency to supply nurses for Jay and other wounded veterans.
